Join a collective celebration of the yogic principal of seva, or selfless service. We gather with the intention of breathing, laughing and loving our way through 108 sun salutations to raise funds for Core/ El Centro, “a dynamic, grassroots non-profit organization that offers individuals of all income levels access to natural healing therapies.”

There are lots of ways to be involved:

* Take to the mat and join in as we create a mala (108) of sun salutations

* Bring a friend or more and tag team (54, 36, or 27 each)

* Pull up a cushion and sit in quiet meditation to hold space

Your questions answered:

What is a sun salutation?

Surya Namaskar, or a sun salutation, is a vinyasa, or series, of 12 yoga poses linked together from breath to breath.

How can I learn to do a sun salutation?

If you are new to the idea of surya namaskar, no worries. We will begin the process slowly and learn as we go. As always, do what's appropriate for your body. Intention is everything.

What is the significance of the number 108?

The number 108 is a significant number in many ways. Here are some of good ones:

Sun and Earth: The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.

Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.

Pranayama (breathwork): It is said that if one is able to be so calm in meditation as to have only 108 breaths in a day, enlightenment will come.
